School-aged children have rapidly growing bodies which need optimal amounts of energy, nutrients, and safe, clean water. Primary school children also undergo a period of fussy eating, and a growing awareness of their food environment both at home and at school. The challenge is for parents and caregivers to provide healthy food and snacks and promote a nutritionally sound food environment in which children can reach their growth and development milestones. Added to this is the nutritional needs of the child who competes in school or club sport, having increased energy and nutrient requirements.
